Discovering Local History

Mills have always played an important role in the community. This day course will explore what the French call "ecomuseums", places that reflect the heritage, character and distinctiveness of an area, not just from the perspective of the past, but with an eye to making sustainable communities of the future. We will look at influences and qualities that have shaped the mill, the village, and the surrounding area, including prehistory (Long Meg Stone Circle); the Romans; the Middle Ages; Long Meg Gypsum mine; the Settle-Carlisle railway; the changing face of farming and agriculture; and the challenges of modern times. If the weather is good we will be out and about quite a lot, so bring walking gear.
